The earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1755 was the latest, and the most devastating, of several in relatively recent history. Wikipedia mentions "eight in the 14th century, five in the 16th century ... and three in the 17th century." In 1531, 1,500 houses were destroyed by an earthquake; and in 1597, three streets vanished in another.
